How this is calculated
Gas cost is heat demand ÷ furnace efficiency × gas price. Heat pump cost is heat demand ÷ seasonal efficiency × electricity price. The difference is your yearly saving (or extra cost).
Frequently asked questions
What seasonal efficiency should I use?
Modern cold-climate heat pumps reach 2.5–3.5 over a season. In mild climates, 3.5 or more is realistic.
When is gas still cheaper?
Roughly when electricity costs more than your heat pump’s efficiency times the gas price per kWh.
