Quick answer

Start with the least aggressive method: remove the stopper and clean out hair, then use a cup plunger. If that fails, use a plastic drain snake or an auger, or remove and clean the P-trap under the sink. Avoid mixing chemical drain cleaners with other methods — they can splash and harm you and older pipes.

Slow drains usually build up over months: hair in the bathroom, grease and food scraps in the kitchen. Most clogs sit within a few feet of the drain opening, which means you can often fix them yourself.

Step by step

  1. Remove the stopper and debris

Pull out the sink stopper or unscrew the shower drain cover and remove any hair and gunk you can reach. Disposable gloves help.

  2. Use a cup plunger

Fill the sink with a few inches of water, cover the overflow hole with a wet cloth and plunge firmly 15–20 times. For double sinks, block the other drain.

  3. Try a plastic drain snake

These inexpensive barbed strips grab hair. Push it in, twist and pull out slowly.

  4. Clean the P-trap

Place a bucket under the curved pipe beneath the sink, unscrew the slip nuts by hand, remove the trap and clean it. Reassemble and run water to check for leaks.

  5. Use a drain auger for deeper clogs

Feed the cable into the drain pipe behind the trap, crank it until you feel resistance, then work through the clog and pull it back.

  6. Flush with hot water

Run hot water for a few minutes to clear remaining residue. Avoid boiling water on PVC pipes and toilet bowls.

Prevent the next clog

  • Use a hair catcher in showers and tubs.
  • Never pour cooking grease down the sink; let it solidify and throw it out.
  • Run hot water for a minute after using the kitchen sink.
  • Don't flush wipes, even “flushable” ones.
When to call a plumber: Water backing up in multiple fixtures, gurgling toilets when the sink drains, or sewage smells point to a main line problem that needs professional equipment.

Frequently asked questions

Do baking soda and vinegar work?

They can freshen drains and help with minor buildup, but they rarely clear a real clog. Mechanical methods work better.

Are chemical drain cleaners safe?

They are caustic and can damage older pipes and septic systems. Never combine them with plunging or other chemicals, and wear eye protection.
